About repairing disk errors in Windows 10

Virtually all Windows 10 users have come across this error message: “Repairing disk errors. This might take over an hour to complete”. This may happen when users try to boot the PC. Repairing disk errors in Windows 10 can occur due to some issues on your boot disk.

Why might a “repairing disk errors” message appear?

You may get the “repairing disk errors” message if your boot disk is unable to boot the computer due to some possible errors. Typically, this error occurs when you forcibly shut down the computer or if the main hard drive is faulty; e.g., it has bad sectors. But this error isn’t that big of a deal. Here are possible fixes to bypass this PC startup error.

Method 1: Try an automatic repair

For this method to work, you need a Windows installation disk to boot the computer.

  • Connect a Windows installation disk
  • Shut down the computer, and while restarting it, press the F12 key to launch the Boot menu
  • Now boot the computer from the connected Windows installation disk
  • Press any key on the keyboard when you get the prompt “Press any key to boot from CD or DVD”
  • Set the time and choose a keyboard type
  • Select "Repair your computer"
  • Then click on Troubleshooting >>> Advanced options >>> Automatic repair

Method 2: Run System Restore

System Restore helps you to roll back your computer to a previous restore point. This action will uninstall new apps on the computer, as well as roll back computer settings. It simply pushes your computer to how it was some weeks or months ago.

  • Insert a bootable drive into the computer and boot from the drive
  • When it gets to the “Install Windows” prompt, select “Repair your computer"
  • Select Troubleshoot >>> Advanced options >>> System Restore
  • Wait for the restoration process to finish

Method 3: Replace the disk

If the above methods don’t work, then you should consider changing your hard disk, because it is possibly not functional anymore. However, if you had created a disk image file to back up the files and data on the faulty drive, then there’s nothing to worry about. Just insert a new drive and restore the backed up data to the new drive.

You can create a disk image to clone the data on your hard drive (if it is still readable). Creating a disk image is very easy when you use DiskInternals Partition Recovery. A disk image saves all the data and files on your hard drive as a single image file that can be saved on any external storage drive. Once you have created a disk image, you don’t have to worry if the hard drive becomes faulty and unable to work – you can simply mount a new hard drive and restore your data from the disk image file.

On the other hand, if you mistakenly deleted some important data from your hard drive, or got into another kind of data loss scenario, with DiskInternals Partition Recovery software, you can get back those lost files and data.

DiskInternals Partition Recovery remains the best backup and data recovery tool for Windows users. It is compatible with Windows 10, 8, and 7.
