What is VMware Cold and Hot Migration
Here you will find out:
- what is cold migration
- what is hot migration
- when DiskInternals can help you
Are you ready? Let's read!
Cold Migration in VMware
VMware cold migration is a migration of a virtual machine with all its configurations and data on another host/data store, while the VM must be turned off or suspended.
Cold migration can be done manually, or you can schedule it as an automatic task.
Migration between hosts, in this case, occurs regardless of whether they are in the same cluster or not.
Cold migration can use the management network, but if the initialization network is turned on, the initialization network will be used instead.
It is also worth noting that VMware cold migration is usually performed between ESXi hosts, which are equipped with different CPU architectures (AMD and Intel).
This type of migration is almost never dangerous for data, installed applications, etc.
Hot Migration in VMware
This type of VM migration is also called live since shutting down the VM is not required and the process itself takes about 5 minutes. Hot migration for full initial synchronization and subsequent delta synchronization uses the vMotion network. Data during vMotion is still transmitted using the provisioning network if it is configured; if provisioning is not configured, then the management network is used. In any case, hot migration allows you to move the included virtual machine or data to another host or other data storage without interruption and downtime.
Thus, if you need to replace or upgrade the components of the VM infrastructure, you don’t need to shut down applications.
If your VM is in trouble
If your virtual machine is in trouble - VMFS Recovery can rescue the data.
DiskInternals VMFS Recovery will help you recover VMDK data in the case of any logical error, virus or malware infection, accidental deletion, etc. This program has been recovering VMware data for more than 15 years, so you will not find a more reliable and efficient assistant. You will also receive a 100% free preview of found files before you need to purchase a license; take this incredible chance. You should not spend your money until you make sure that your data is secure. DiskInternals VMFS Recovery automatically checks the current state of RAID (if used), VMware VMFS data storage, and disks; it reads VMDK images, as well as VMFS structures where possible. After this, automatic data recovery also occurs where possible. Recovered files and folders using the Recovery Wizard are exported to local or remote locations (including FTP).
Use these instructions for DiskInternals VMFS Recovery, and the process will go even faster:
Download the application and install it. Open the application on your computer and proceed to restore VMware VMFS data.
Connect via SSH if necessary.
Open the drive — it could be via SSH or a local drive.
After scanning, locate the necessary VMDK files. Next, mount the VMDK file.
Open it with the left mouse button and select the file browsing function to check for their integrity and make sure the application has worked as expected.
The last step is to purchase a license and obtain a license key after that. With it, you can complete the exporting of data.
Congratulations, the painstaking work is done! Enjoy!
