Remote desktop software with Ubuntu

Working remotely helps to simplify one's schedules and facilitate task completion. Interestingly, Ubuntu comes with a built-in remote desktop utility that lets you connect to a PC from macOS, Windows, or Linux. This built-in remote desktop software supports VNC and RDP protocols. It grants you free access to your Ubuntu system from any other device (computer or mobile).

How to remote control an Ubuntu

There are typically three ways to remote control an Ubuntu system: Secure Shell (SSH), Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP), and Virtual Network Computing (VNC). For Linux users, SSH is the best option, but for Windows and macOS users, RDP or VNC is the best, because they feature a graphical user interface (GUI).

Interestingly, Ubuntu's built-in remote desktop tool allows you to connect with SSH, VNC, or RDP, thereby making it possible to access an Ubuntu PC from a mobile device via VNC.

Remote Desktop Ubuntu (Linux)

If your Ubuntu PC is configured for remote connections, it can connect to any Linux distro, as most Linux distros support a built-in remote desktop viewer. Here's how to set it up:

On a Linux system:

  • Click "Search" and type "remote."
  • Select "Remmina."
  • Choose "VNC" from the dropdown menu options on the left pane.
  • Fill in the VNC address (or IP address) for your Ubuntu PC (the one you're remotely connecting to).
  • Hit the Enter key to connect.
  • Enter the password if prompted.

The Remmina tool will help you connect Ubuntu desktops to control them remotely over a network.

Use RDP to connect to Ubuntu

Most platforms support RDP. For Linux users, Remmina's RDP function can remotely connect the Linux PC to Ubuntu. Alternatively, for Windows users, RDP is built into the Remote Desktop Connection program. Follow the steps below to connect to Ubuntu using RDP on Windows or Linux.

Ubuntu/Linux

  • Launch Remmina
  • Select RDP from the option in the dropdown menu.
  • Enter the remote PC's IP address.
  • Hit the Enter key on the keyboard.

Windows:

  • Click on the search bar/icon and enter "remote desktop."
  • Click on Remote Desktop Control.
  • At the bottom, click on "Show Options" to expand the options.
  • Enter the remote PC's IP address or ID.
  • You can customize the remote connection settings by toggling the tabs. Click "Connect" when you're done.

macOS:

  • Install Remote Desktop 10.
  • Launch the app and choose "Add Desktop".
  • Enter the Ubuntu PC's IP address.
  • Click "Save".
  • Return to the app window and double-click on the connection icon to start a remote connection.
