ESXi Management: All You Wanted to Know

Here you will find out:

  • about ESXi management
  • how to perform ESXi management
  • when DiskInternals can help you

Are you ready? Let's read!

About ESXi management

ESXi management is possible using VMware Workstation; this program allows you to manage multiple ESXi hosts and a virtual machine running on ESXi hosts. VMware Workstation is constantly updated and has many new features and capabilities that make virtualization of systems even more exciting and useful.

How to manage VMware ESXi with VMware Workstation

To get started, go to VMware Workstation. On the taskbar, select File and from the list select "Connect to Server".

Next, select the server to which you will connect; in this case, VMware ESXi. Next, enter the hostname and provide all root credentials. Click the Connect button and accept the certificate of the remote server.

And here is what you can do:

  • You can create a new VM on the ESXi host. To do this, select "Create a new virtual machine." Also, you can choose hardware compatibility with the virtual machine in accordance with the ESXi version. Note: in maintenance mode, this option will not be available.
  • ESXi power management is also available. To do this, put the ESXi host in maintenance mode by clicking on the "Enter Maintenance Mode" button and the Continue button. As a result, you can shut down, reboot the host, etc.
  • You can add vCenter Servers to VMware Workstation inventory. This allows you to remotely manage virtual machines in VMware Workstation.
  • To see what other options and functions are available for you, right-click on the VM and select “Available allowed operations on the virtual machine”. There may be a huge number, and here are some of them: go into the guest operating system, edit the virtual machine configuration, create snapshots of virtual machines and manage to increase or decrease the amount of memory and CPU, access the virtual machine console, etc.

How to manage VMware ESXi with PowerCLI

The PowerCLI application is based on the PowerShell platform, so it will be very appropriate if you are familiar with the basic commands and the specifics of PowerShell. You can install PowerCLI in just a few steps:

  1. 1. Launch PowerShell as an administrator.
  1. 2. Next, enter the command:

Install-Module VMware.PowerCLI

  1. 3. Next, follow the instructions to quickly complete the installation of the program.

It should be understood that PowerShell includes an execution policy to protect the system from damage. It, in turn, limits the execution of default scripts.

How to manage VMware ESXi with vSphere Client or the vSphere Web Client

VSphere Client and vSphere Web Client are two other options for the VMware management console. These can be the easiest and most fine-grained way to manage the ESXi host and its virtual machines.

So, here is how to connect to the ESXi host in this option:

You can use the direct connect to the ESXi web interface after installing the vSphere Client.

If you are using vCenter Server:

  • You can also use vSphere Client to connect and work with vCenter Server.
  • You can use the vSphere web client to connect and use vCenter Server through a web browser.

Something more for excellent VMware ESXi management

VMware ESXi uses formatted VMFS disks. Sometimes, for whatever reason, data may be lost. In this case, the professional VMDK file recovery software tool DiskInternals VMFS Recovery will come to your aid. The application makes recovery comprehensive and automatic, which is available thanks to a step-by-step recovery wizard. Thus, even amateurs and beginners can use this application.

You can view the files found by the program for free; buying a license will be a well-thought-out and informed step.

Instructions for use:

Open the program after downloading and installation are completed.

Connect via SSH (or skip this step).

Open your local drive or SSH drive.

The scanning process may take some time. After that, locate the VMDK files and carefully mount the VMDK file.

Now open and use the free preview function.

Buying a license to complete the export of data is the last step!
