SSD in RAID Array Guide

Here you will find out:

  • about SSD in RAID Array
  • how DiskInternals can help you

Are you ready? Let's read!

Using SSD RAID Array

RAID arrays are the point of reference for resiliency and performance. The array can be implemented in various configurations and levels depending on the user's requirements (speed, redundancy, or both).

Recently, used to create arrays solid-state drives have been used, so users can achieve shorter access times and higher I / O speeds, more redundancy. These arrays allow for faster recovery of a parity-based RAID configuration. However, the raid on the SSD-based is not fault-tolerant and SSD RAID can fail at any time, for the following reasons:

  • Software glitch
  • Failure of the RAID controller
  • Sudden power surges
  • User errors and CRC errors
  • Worn SSD connectors
  • Overheating disk due to improper ventilation or bad sectors
  • Physical damage to the solid-state drive

Also, have limited write I / O capacity and erase cycles, so they will eventually die anyway. However, you can still restore a RAID 0, RAID 5, or RAID 6 configuration, and also restore data from a reconstructed RAID volume without any RAID controller card. Continue to study this article and you will find out everything.

Recovering SSD RAID Array

SSD consists of two main components - controller and NAND Flash, as well as several others on a printed circuit board with or without enclosure.

Examine controller

It executes the software at the firmware level and is mainly device dependent.

NAND Flash Memory

Non-volatile flash memory supports higher storage capacities and offers faster read / write operations than NOR. The SSD cannot overwrite existing data, so the "TRIM" command is used. It simply marks the data as invalid, and the actual erasure occurs when the user writes data to the NAND drive (SSD).

To determine the interface are used - SATA, mSATA, M.2 or PCIe, OP or Over-Provisioning.

Parameters

To recover data from an SSD RAID, you need to know some of the RAID parameters:

  • Number of disks
  • Location of disks
  • Stripe or block size
  • Parity order
  • Repeat parity or latency

If you have a RAID 0, look only for the “Stripe or Block Size” parameter. After you have mastered this knowledge of your RAID, move on to SSD RAID Reconstruction and Data Recovery with DiskInternals RAID Recovery software.

Connect to the disk

So let's start by removing all SSDs from the RAID and use the HDD / SSD enclosure or SATA - USB 3.0 or 2.0 connecting cables to connect each SSD to Windows PC together.

Recover data

After that, you should go to the DiskInternals website and download the trial version of the RAID Recovery application. With the dedicated RAID data recovery software from DiskInternals, you can expertly recover data from an SSD RAID array. It has an intuitive and easy-to-use graphical interface where you simply follow the wizard's instructions to add RAID parameters after connecting the RAID SSD, and then restore the data in several steps.

However, the utility will also help you create a disk image unaided and completely free.

This application has been leading in recent years as it has been continuously improved and modernized by leading IT professionals and has been kept up to date since 2004. The application automatically detects the type and level of the original RAID, the number and sequence of disks and other characteristics of the array and, with sufficient client skills, provides completely manual management. This is especially useful because you can monitor and control the rebuilding of the array every minute.

The free preview is a great bonus and addition to the main features of the app, and no license purchase is required here. But if you want to export the recovered info, then a license is required.

Recovery algorithm using this product:

Install DiskInternals RAID Recovery on your computer/server, open the application and launch the Wizard.

The program automatically detects the available connected arrays - select the one you want and then click full or shallow recovery mode. After scanning, preview the results for free, and then complete the whole process by purchasing a license agreement and exporting the data. Good luck!
