About Antimalware Service Executable

Windows Defender, a free utility for protecting against malware and viruses, is integrated into the Windows 10 operating system. In previous versions of Windows, and in particular its Windows 7, the utility was called Microsoft Security Essentials and, accordingly, has been upgraded to a newer version.

Windows 10 Defender is necessary if the user does not update the existing installed antivirus program and does not ensure constant protection of the OS. The utility works in the background around the clock. If a user has downloaded software from the Web, Windows Defender checks for viruses the first time that such a program is opened. The utility also scans the operating system and checks for updates to antivirus programs.

Windows Defender

In order to find out what the file is called, open the Task Manager, and the name MsMpEng.exe is displayed in the Processes section. However, the process itself is called the antimalware service executable Windows 10. The user may also participate in the Windows Defender utility to scan and check its history. It only takes a few simple steps:

  • Open the Start menu in the lower-left-hand corner of your screen and go to Windows Defender Security Center.
  • Click on Settings and go to Update & Security.
  • The Windows Defender tab will open, then go to the Open Windows Defender Security Center subsection.

As you can see above, the antimalware service executable regularly scans the OS in the background, manifesting itself in consuming a significant amount of CPU or disk resources. Moreover, when files are opened in the directories of the disk, the antimalware service checks for malicious software. Each time you perform such actions, depending on the size of the file, the operating system needs a certain amount of time to process such information.

It is also possible to scan the file system for malware while you are not using your personal computer, consuming a certain percentage of the CPU. The utility is designed so that background scanning does not occur while the user is using the computer.

In general, it is common for such a utility to use some amount of CPU to make you feel secure.

Antimalware Service Executable fix

In the absence of other antivirus software on your device, it is highly discouraged to disable Windows Defender. If you still decide to disable this program, then keep in mind that there is no way to disable it permanently, only for a while.

To do this, do the following: go to the start menu and go to Windows Defender Security Center. Find Virus & Threat Protection and go to the Virus & Threat Protection Settings tab. Here, you need to disable Real-Time Protection.

Even though you have disabled real-time protection at the moment, Windows Defender will function again after a while. This will often happen if Windows Defender does not detect an additional antivirus program on the device. The only way to get rid of Windows Defender services is to install additional antivirus software, as it is impossible to disable it in the task scheduler.

To check if Windows 10 Defender is disabled, go to the Windows Defender Security Center, and the information "You are using other antivirus software providers" will be displayed in the Virus and Threat Protection subsection. Naturally, an antivirus component must be installed on your PC before that. Scanning with the Defender is still possible in this case, but there should be no CPU consumption.

There is also the simultaneous use of a third-party antivirus program and Windows Defender. Following the above path, open Settings for Windows Defender. It is enough to enable Periodic scanning, and your Windows Defender will continue to scan the file system regularly.

This will give you an alternative opinion on the presence of malware while running additional antivirus software on your computer. However, when using multiple antivirus programs at the same time, you may experience excessive CPU usage. It is important to disable Periodic Scan promptly for the best computer performance.

You might be thinking that a virus might cause the "Windows 10 antimalware service executable" error. This is highly unlikely since Windows Defender is originally an antivirus utility and neutralizes any malware. In case of any doubt, you can simply check it by running a scan with any third-party antivirus program installed on your PC.

If malicious software or a virus still deleted or damaged your files, you need the necessary recovery program

One of the best and most efficient ones on the market is DiskInternals Partition Recovery. Regardless of the professional skill (just basic knowledge of computer skills is enough), the user can easily use the program. However, there is no time to delay.

The more time passes since the damage of your documents, music, photos, and other things, the fewer chances of achieving one hundred percent recovery. Don’t panic first, and do not try to change anything in the place on the disk where the incident occurred. This concerns copying and adding new data to the directory. Overwriting will occur, and the deleted data will no longer be returned in the past.

Download and open the trial version of DiskInternals Partition Recovery. At the start, you will have access to a recovery wizard who will accompany you at all stages. Then select the disk partition where the valuable data was deleted or damaged. Select the recovery mode “reader”, “uneraser”, or “full recovery”. The next step will scan the file system. The duration of the stage will depend on the selected mode; please be patient. At the end of the process, you will be able to preview the recovered files. Now, you are finally convinced of the smart features of the program.

DiskInternals Partition Recovery works with many kinds of storage media, for example, HDD, SSD, flash drive, external hard drive, memory cards, IDE disk, SATA disk, SCSI disk, etc. After ensuring that the program is effective, purchase a license key on the official DiskInternals Partition Recovery website and select the localization on the disk to save the data. And now, following the above instructions, you will return your valuable data to the device again and will not worry about them in the future.
