Is it possible to remove a dual-boot menu?

When you have two Windows versions running on your computer, you’ll see a screen (called Boot Manager) prompting you to choose between the available versions while booting the computer. If you’re tired of using two versions of Windows and want to stick to one, here is how to remove the dual-boot menu.

Windows Boot Manager

How to turn off Boot Menu

Right-click on “Start,” then click on “System”. When the “System” page opens, look to the left pane and click on “Advanced system settings”.

Now, go to the “Advanced” tab and click on the “Settings” button under "Startup and Recovery". When the dialogue box appears, select a "default operating system" – you could choose the newer version or the older version.

Uncheck the boxes beside “time to display…” and then click “OK” to save. Afterward, restart the computer, and you won't see the dual-boot menu anymore.

How to choose the version of Windows to boot from directly

Windows’ built-in MSConfig utility can help you define the OS version you want your computer to always boot with. This is an advanced Windows utility tool, and it runs with admin access.

  • Press Windows key + R and type “MSConfig” in the Run box.
  • Toggle to the “Boot” tab and indicate the version of Windows you want to set as default.
  • Click the “Set as Default” option after you have selected your preferred Windows version.
  • You can delete the other Windows version by highlighting it and clicking on the “Delete” button.

When you’re done, click “OK” and restart the computer. However, you should know that when you delete a Windows version from the MSConfig interface, it doesn’t actually remove the Windows version from your computer; it simply hides it from showing up in the dual-boot menu.

How to remove Windows 7 for dual-boot without losing data

If you've deleted Windows 7 and decide to stick with Windows 10, you may also think it wise to delete the Windows 7 partition(s) to create more space on your hard disk, right? But if there are files saved on the partition, you will lose them all when you delete the partition. Hence, you should create a disk image of your hard disk and save on an external storage device. Disk images are more advanced than typical backups, because a disk image retains your disk’s statements and deleted data, too.

Once you’ve made the disk image, open Disk Management on Windows and delete the Windows 7 partition by right-clicking on the partition and then click “Delete Volume”.
