How To Fix Your System Requires SMB2 or Higher

In this article you will find out:

  • how to deal with this issue
  • how to protect your data

Are you ready? Let's read!

About The Issue

According to some Windows 10 users, when they try to access certain files on their PCs, they get an error that reads: Your System Requires SMB2 or Higher and this prevents them from opening the requested file. What is this error and how can you fix it?

System requires SMB2 or higher: fix

1. Examine the System

First, you have to check if your system supports the SMB2 protocol. Here’s how to do that:

  • Launch PowerShell as administrator (right-click on Start and choose the option).
  • Enter these command and hit the Enter key: Get-SmbServerConfiguration | Select EnableSMB2Protocol.
  • If the command returns True, it means your PC can run SMB2.
  • Now, click on the Search icon on the taskbar and search Windows Features > choose the appropriate app and enable SMB1/CIFS File Sharing Support.
  • Save and exit.

2. Try PowerShell Commands

These PowerShell commands can help to fix the issue:

  • Launch PowerShell as Admin.
  • Enter the following command: Set-SmbServerConfiguration –EnableSMB2Protocol $true.
  • Type Y and hit the Enter key again.
  • Close PowerShell and restart your PC.

If the error persists, the surefire solution is to roll back your OS update (if you did one recently)

However, rolling back a system update can lead to the loss of important files and documents. Thus, it is strongly advised to carry out a comprehensive backup of your files before performing such action.

There are actually many ways to backup your data, but the most reliable way to do that is to use data backup/recovery software. Interestingly, DiskInternals Partition Recovery is a multi-feature software that supports creating full-disk backups in the form of Disk Images.

Disk Images are more convenient and reliable than regular backups. A Disk Image is a clone of the selected storage drive; it contains everything that's available (stored) in that disk, including the configurations. Hence, it proves better than regular backups.

How to Create a Disk Image With DiskInternals Partition Recovery

  • Download the software and install it on your Windows PC.
  • Launch the app after installation and cancel the Wizard box that would launch automatically.
  • Select the disk you want to backup, right-click and choose Create Disk Image. You can also click on Drives on the menu bar and select Create Image.
  • Now, choose where to save the disk image - it has to be saved in an external location since you're planning to roll back updates on your PC.

After the backup, you can go ahead and roll back OS updates. More interestingly, DiskInternals Partition recovery is primarily a data recovery software capable of recovering all types of lost files and documents. It comes with three scanning modes and supports all known Windows OS file systems. Furthermore, with DiskInternals Partition Recovery, you can get back an entire lost partition. It is fast, reliable, and simple to use, thanks to the built-in Wizard.
